The only way to build sustainable power in low-income areas is by developing
local leaders to organize their neighbors and their community. Professional
staff organizers and volunteer community activists are both trained through
this program. Currently, four of our organizers on staff developed their
skills through our Leadership Development Program.
New volunteers learn how to organize by going door-to-door to talk to
their neighbors about issues like housing, health care and child care.
As they see our model in action, volunteers learn:
- How the democratic process works,
- How to organize their neighbors and their community,
- How to hold public officials accountable to their needs, and
- How to create social change.
The best way to learn how our Leadership Development Program works is
to tell you the personal stories of our organizers – both volunteer
and professional – who have grown out of our work.
