Background & Vision of Development Program

Neighbor to Neighbor has a strong development program, with half of our funding coming from individual donors. The incoming Director of Development will have a solid foundation on which to build, and work with staff eager to learn the importance of fundraising.

We have a loyal donor base, including many major donors with whom we have strong relationships. Our challenge is to build out our donor base to acquire new donors at all giving levels. 2017 is N2N’s 20th anniversary, which offers opportunities to invite our current donors to step up their giving, and to invite new donors to join through a series of house parties and new, creative acquisition techniques. We also plan to launch a planned giving program in 2017, and the Director of Development will lead this process.

On the foundation side, N2N is one of the few state-wide organizations that works at the intersection of economic, racial and climate justice. We see potential for new foundation support in this area of work. N2N is also one of the few people of color led organizations in the state that has a c-4, electoral program that is integrated with our issue campaigns.

Position Description & Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position is a strong writer and a process-oriented person who values relationship building. Strong candidates will also bring a background in community organizing, an analysis of economic, environmental and racial justice, and knowledge of or experience in c-4, electoral work. The ideal candidate should be ready to work in partnership with our Executive Director and be open to learning new strategies. The Director of Development must be committed to the mission and values of Neighbor to Neighbor as well as best practices in donor-centric fundraising and donor relations.

We desire a strong communicator, both oral and written, who can create compelling communications for supporters that will instill satisfaction, commitment, and trust among our donor pool.

Given that our entire staff is Latino/a, our ideal candidate will have a racial justice analysis, experience working with or living in communities of color, and be ready to engage as a team player among this powerful, dynamic staff.

Because of our all-staff fundraising model, our chosen applicant will be a good listener and a motivating coach, leveraging the strengths of each person to do their best fundraising. Neighbor to Neighbor has a process-oriented, collaborative culture, and successful candidates will embrace this.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director to Development will work with the Executive Director to design and implement a plan to take the organization’s development program to the next level. This work will require a strategic and creative thinker who is ready to learn and implement best fundraising techniques.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibilities for the position include:

Strategy: Work with the Executive Director to identify revenue needs, funding targets, and approaches, and develop short- and long-range development plans that support the organization’s mission. Research funding sources and trends, and help position Neighbor to Neighbor ahead of major funding changes. Help establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.

Fundraising: Together with the Executive Director, conduct research, prospecting, and solicitation of multiple funding sources – foundations, individuals, and unions. Develop stewardship and acknowledgement strategies to build long-term relationships with foundation officers, donors, and prospects, and deepen their commitment and connection to the organization. Plan and execute appeal campaigns, events, and development communications. Prepare proposals, reports, and other materials for foundation grants.

Management: Train and mentor staff in development, assisting their relationship building and solicitation of individual donors. Support staff and membership grassroots fundraising. Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program at staff and leadership team meetings.

Qualifications

We are seeking applicants who have most, if not all, of the following qualifications and experience:

Development/Fundraising: Two or more years in development. Experience creating and implementing fundraising plans. Experience with individual giving, foundation work, event planning, and donor communications. Track record of deepening donor relationships and cultivating new ones.

Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing organizing or development projects, including working with others to reach common goals and objectives. Ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials.

Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with a diverse range of people, across the organization and externally.

Team Player: High energy and passion for Neighbor to Neighbor’s mission. Flexible, humble, and adaptable style. Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

Community Organizing: At least one to two years working at an organization that does community organizing, and passion for economic, racial, and environmental justice.

Location

The position is based in downtown Boston, with the possibility for working remotely from N2N’s Holyoke or Lynn offices.

Compensation

Salary: $55-70k DOE. Benefits include fully paid health insurance coverage for individuals and families; paid holidays, sick time, and three weeks paid vacation; Flexible Spending Account, pension plan, and disability.
